"We have as much responsibility to look after the community as everybody else"

Posted on 01 August 2016

Not only does volunteering with Groundwork satisfy our desire to be involved in CSR and to play a part in the communities that we’re involved with but it’s also great for our wellbeing.

"Today the Siemen’s UK legal team are at Bishop’s Park in Fulham to volunteer with Groundwork. There are just over 30 of us here and we’ve been split into teams and been tasked with improving railings surrounding the park by sanding and painting them whilst our other team is clearing and planting vegetation.

"My role at Siemen’s is the Head of Legal in the UK. We have quite a big team so there are 75 of us spread across the country in different offices supporting different areas of the business that engage in big contractual work.

"It feels so great to get out of the office and get involved in volunteering with Groundwork. We all have desk jobs and I was reading an article just this morning that said that if you sit at your desk job for 8 hours a day the risk to your health is as much as smoking, so for us wellbeing is so important.

"Not only does volunteering with Groundwork satisfy our desire to be involved in CSR and to play a part in the communities that we’re involved with but it’s also great for our wellbeing. We’re out and about, we’re moving around and we’re getting fresh air so it’s a win - win for us.

"There are many layers to the benefits of companies getting involved in volunteering. Large corporates have a responsibility to the communities they are part of. Corporations are very fortunate that we have lots of resources. Not just money, but people and time. We are part of the community in the same way a school or hospital is – we are engrained in the areas that we work in. We have as much responsibility to look after the community as everybody else.

"For the team, there is a huge amount of value. It gives us an opportunity to spend time together. So often our conversations are only about work, contracts or money – it’s great to get to know each other on a more personal level and spend the day together as a team. For us, because we are spread across sites throughout the UK, to get everybody together in one place is just fantastic."
