Our local Groundwork Trust was established in 1983 as one of the first Groundwork Trusts.
Formed as a partnership between the local authorities and the Countryside Commission, our aim was to enhance and manage the urban fringe areas by creating a partnership between the public, private and voluntary sectors.
We soon grew to encompass a wide variety of environmental improvement projects across our area of operations, from the Pennine Way to inner-city urban sites. We also became involved with education and training, personal development programmes and business support schemes.
By 1987, Groundwork’s activities were starting to receive national attention. Restoration of Pennine Way footpaths and an environmental programme at Shaw & Crompton Parish Council were two of over 1000 projects that involved thousands of local people, businesses and community groups. Many resulted in high profile visitors to the area. HRH the Princess of Wales became the Groundwork movement’s first Royal visitor when she opened the nature trail at the Trusts’ Princess Park Countryside Nature Park in Oldham.
During the 1990’s the Trust started to deliver more personal development programmes – two of which are still in existence today. The Volunteer Project Assistant (VPA) programme provides unemployed graduates with real project management experience to help kick-start their careers. In 1998 the Prince’s Trust Team programme started at the Trust, offering new skills and qualifications to local unemployed people aged 16-25.
The Trust today runs a range of programmes still focussed on changing places and changing lives in the local area. These include employment programmes, youth work, education and community activity, landscape and conservation projects, business support schemes, training involving basic skills and construction, and our unique programme for unemployed graduates. We have also recently developed successful partnership programmes to transform empty homes and tackle fuel poverty.
In 2013 we took on the delivery of Groundwork programmes in Bolton and Bury. We are now developing and expanding successful partnerships in these areas, bringing with us our experience and innovative approach to local regeneration.
