Meet the Team: Katie Dean, Community Project Officer

Posted on 08 March 2017

Katie is based in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and runs lots of brilliant projects - which make use of her varied background and her passions.

Katie Dean, Community Project OfficerI’m a Community Project Officer, which means I have a lot of fingers in a lot of pies (as most people do here at Groundwork). I work on a few different projects including the Tesco Bags of Help community grant scheme and our ecotherapy project Mind, Body & Soil, based at Huntingdon Community Nursery. I am also about to start a brand new environmental education project called Fenland Explorers, which will involve running outdoor sessions with children and families to work towards a John Muir Discovery award.

I have also just taken on the role of Internal Auditor for Groundwork’s ISO 9001 standard in quality management, which is something quite different to the rest of my role.

Over the years, I’ve probably done just about every type of job going, from working in zoos and outdoor centres to manufacturing pharmaceuticals and teaching on top of a mountain in America. I’ve had some pretty exciting experiences along the way, including swimming with whale sharks, sky diving, and living in the Ugandan rainforest.

I love working for an organisation that really makes a difference and shares my own values and passions. It’s been a long journey for me to get into a career like this that offers so much variety and allows me to work on some fantastic projects.

Here in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough we work a lot on improving people’s prospects through projects such as the Green Team, Mind Body & Soil and EDGE. We are fast expanding and developing our reach though and I am excited about heading up our first environmental education project in the area. The Bags of Help funding opportunities have been really popular here too and have allowed us to help some really great projects and make some new connections with other groups and organisations.
