Neighbourhood Planning - what you need to know

The Department for Communities and Local Government have launched the ‘Neighbourhood Planning’ initiative to put power back into the hands of local communities and allow them to have their say on their local area.

Neighbourhood Planning allows local neighbourhoods to have an active say everything from housing provision, to protecting local greenspaces to improving the overall look of the area.

The model gives communities the opportunity to form a plan of action for their local area. By working together, the neighbourhood then casts their vote on the proposals put forward for the local authority to put into force.

At present, nearly 2,000 communities in England have already started Neighbourhood Planning. All the information can be found on the website including advice on:

  • A simple step-by-step guide to getting started and beyond
  • Communication templates
  • Advice on writing the plan
  • Guidance on how to kick start the plan
