Green Dragon Environmental Standard
Green Dragon is an environmental standard that is awarded to organisations that are taking action to understand, monitor and control their impacts on the environment.
It was designed in the early 2000s to promote better environmental management particularly by SME and in Wales has been very successful in engaging companies in EMS which would probably have never have contemplated using ISO 14001.
However, it applies equally well to the public sector, voluntary agencies and larger companies where some striking improvements in environmental management have been secured.
The Standard is structured into five “steps” to allow organisations to gain recognition for their progress with their environmental management even if they do not have a full EMS in place. Level 5 of Green Dragon is comparable to ISO 14001. Many organisations use Green Dragon as a route to ISO 14001, which also allows them recognition of their achievements at each stage of the journey. Other organisations target a lower level of Green Dragon, enabling them to demonstrate their environmental credentials at a level that is appropriate to them.
Over 1000 organisations have achieved certification against the standard since its inception. This is significantly more awards than any other phased EMS schemes operating in the UK.
At Level 1, the Standard provides an introduction to environmental management. It requires an Environmental Review of customers’ activities and identification of opportunities for improvement. Moving through the Levels, increasingly rigorous demands are made on performance. By Level 5 Green Dragon is equivalent to, and in fact requires a greater environmental commitment in respect to public reporting and carbon emissions than ISO14001 and EMAS. This allows organisations to use Green Dragon as a route to ISO14001, whilst achieving recognised and accredited certification at each Level.
