Alex volunteers for Groundwork East as part of the Green Aiders team. The programme helps elderly, disabled, or vulnerable adults take control of their overgrown gardens through a one-off gardening service to help prevent burglaries and vandalism that an unkempt garden can attract.
“I’ve worked with the Green Aiders team for the past four years after hearing about the programme through a voluntary organisation.
“I volunteer with the team twice a week and I really enjoy the work we do. I appreciate that people need our help and why it’s so important that we help them. It’s so wonderful to see the look on people’s faces after we have worked on the garden – it makes volunteering really worthwhile.”
“I’ve worked on many gardens over the years, but one particular highlight was when I worked on the gardens of a whole street of bungalows. We were there for a while and it was so satisfying to look over the fences of the gardens I had already worked on and see that they still looked good! I’m a hard worker, so it’s great when you see results at the end of a long day.
“I’m currently unemployed so working with the team is giving me new skills for my CV and references. Its great meeting new people and I really enjoy I enjoy working with the team – we’re a good group.”
