We make a long-term commitment to supporting neighbourhoods
viewed as disadvantaged and work closely alongside other
organisations and existing initiatives to help improve the quality
of life for people living there. Our projects help to build
pride in an area and reduce the fear of crime - our experience
tells us that making places cleaner and greener can also help make
them safer. We often work alongside residents and housing
professionals to ‘design-out’ crime and deter
anti-social behaviour, joy-riding and burglaries.
We help people improve the appearance of their streets, parks
and housing estates and encourage greater cohesion within
neighbourhoods by helping residents of different ages, cultures and
backgrounds to get to know one another and take responsibility for
their surroundings. When communities get involved in making
their neighbourhood a better place to live, improvements are more
likely to last.
| With funding from the Home Office, Groundwork is helping refugees brush up their gardening skills as well as make their neighbourhood cleaner and greener. The project, which involves planting bulbs and flowers in a deprived corner of south London, breaks down stereotypes and helps improve relations between isolated groups of refugees as well as providing them with skills and confidence. |
