Groundwork accredited Landis+Gyr against the national Workplace Wellbeing Charter; a best practice framework that demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of its employees.
The Landis+Gyr Stockport site has been accredited for meeting the conditions specified by the prestigious Workplace Wellbeing Charter. The accreditation was awarded in May 2106 as a result of the organisation’s concentrated efforts to improve staff welfare. One of the more notable benefits is that sickness absence rates currently stand at less than 3%.
Located at Orion Business Park in Stockport, the site houses two large manufacturing facilities working 3-shifts each working day, and it also has back office functions that include R&D, Quality, HR and marketing. It has gone from strength to strength over recent years, more than doubling its workforce since 2013. It now employs over 650 staff.
Gavin Carlo, HR Manager at Landis+Gyr explained that Charter Accreditation made sense because the organisation already met most of the requirements. In addition, there was a commercial imperative because the accreditation aids recruitment and retention of staff. The UK site kicked off the process by completing a self-assessment against the Charter framework. This helped identify areas of strength and provided a useful framework for future improvement.
"Without the benchmarking we would have been lost. Having specific examples and policies helped us keep things structured," said Gavin.
"We did the self-assessment online, only to discover we already covered many of the H&S policies, attendance management, and occupational health support, which made things a lot easier. Our awareness initiatives we ran really opened people’s eyes to the importance of wellbeing."
Landis+Gyr then undertook an employee Wellbeing Survey at the site and established a staff Wellbeing Group to help ensure they fully understood the issues and help identify areas to which more resources needed to be allocated. Feedback from the survey revealed that staff wanted a new health surveillance supplier who was physically based on site rather than on the other end of a phone. This and other results were factored into a 12-month wellbeing action plan that included a number of awareness raising activities.
The initiatives included a local gym that came to talk about the benefits of exercise. Some staff members signed up at the gym while others joined running and badminton groups. Some even gave up smoking. There was also a consultant from 'Mind', the mental health charity, who ran a number of sessions on mental health awareness that helped improve stress management, relationship management and approach to work-life balance. Further, staff gave back through charity fundraising and in supporting unemployed members of the local community in returning to work.
Perhaps the biggest change in working towards accreditation was in the attitude within the organisation. It put wellbeing firmly onto the business agenda, a must-have rather than a nice-to-have. As a result the senior management team has made wellbeing an on-going priority.
For others considering accreditation, Gavin said:
"It’s definitely worth doing but don’t forget to take a long-term approach. Accreditation has to be officially renewed every two years so you need to keep involvement and enthusiasm going. It’s not something you simply achieve and then move on. It’s an on-going process."
About the Charter
The nationally recognised Workplace Wellbeing Charter ensures workplaces are conduc
ive to supporting good health and wellbeing. It is an evidence-based framework endorsed by Public Health England.
It has two parts:
The self-assessment checklist allows organisations to benchmark their current performance and provides a useful tool to plan their Wellbeing Strategy.
The accreditation process is a formal recognition process through which the assessor reviews and tests evidence through a site visit and employee interviews.
The Charter covers topics of Leadership, Absence Management, Health and Safety, Mental health, Smoking and Tobacco, Physical Activity, Healthy Eating and Alcohol and Substance misuse. Each topic has a commitment, achievement and excellence level.
Accreditation lasts 2 years at which point reaccreditation should be sought.
