Wandle Valley Regional Park

The River Wandle flows from Croydon and meanders through southwest London to the Thames at Wandsworth. The banks of this 11 mile river are pocketed with parks and open spaces which will be linked through the development of the Wandle Valley Regional Park.

The vision of the Wandle Valley Regional Park has been created through a partnership of several organisations including Groundwork London, four local Boroughs (Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton and Croydon), the Greater London Authority, local businesses, statutory agencies and third sector organisations.

Over the past decade the partnership has worked on many individual regeneration projects trying to reverse some of the results of years of neglect. They have now come together with the joint vision of creating:

"An innovative, sustainable and high quality Regional Park in the Wandle Valley that is easily accessible, with a rich and thriving biodiversity, offering recreational, landscape, heritage, cultural and resource management benefits in which local people and businesses can take pride and ownership."

The Trust has consulted widely with communities, local businesses and interested parties over recent years to build support for the initiative.  In April 2010 Groundwork jointly hosted a conference to bring people together to share their ideas and aspirations for realising the Wandle Valley Regional Park vision. This has seen the establishment of themed working groups across partner organisations and community groups to foster integration of planning and delivery of projects and services across the regional park area.

The Wandle Valley Regional Park is currently in its transitional phase, in which Groundwork is working closely with partners to support the establishment of a governance and implementation framework.
