Wandle Valley Low Carbon Zone

The Wandle Valley Low Carbon Zone is centred on the Phipps Bridge Estate in Merton.

Chosen as an area of housing in particular need of upgrading, Phipps Bridge has almost 1,000 homes that qualify for a visit by a Groundwork ‘Green Doctor’.  The offer is simple - our ‘Doctor’ will visit your home, assess energy usage and help install simple free of charge devices to help save energy and money.

The project started in April this year and the Green Doctors have already been successful in engaging with local residents. On the tour delegates will not only hear from a Green Doctor, but will also have the opportunity of meeting householders to see the results at first hand.

The Wandle Valley project is just one example of 12 Green Doctor projects pioneered by Groundwork around the country to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes in deprived communities, combating fuel poverty and climate change whilst creating local training opportunities.

This local delivery is crucial, an Ipsos MORI survey on home energy efficiency commissioned by Groundwork found that many people want help and advice to encourage them to install energy saving measures in their homes, but would not choose energy companies to provide this service. Advisors from community-based organisations may be more trusted, and better able to combat fuel poverty by connecting people with other local services.
