Green Doctor in action
Nearly 1,000 homes have managed to save a total of £80,000 in the past year, following the recommendations of energy efficiency consultants Green Doctors, who have been providing support and advice to homes in three deprived zones – Slough, Leeds and North London. Run by environmental charity Groundwork, and supported by the Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development (Ebico Trust ) - a charitable trust set up by not-for-profit energy supplier Ebico - the scheme’s mission is to tackle fuel poverty amongst vulnerable residents.
Close to 1,000 homes in the three zones have been visited already with over, five and a half thousand improvements made including:
- 1,964 energy saving bulbs
- 2,046 energy saving radiator panes that reflect heat back into the room rather than being absorbed by external walls
- 487 power down devices which will turn off your appliances after a period of time to ensure that energy isn’t wasted by leaving them on
- 805 draft excluders
At the beginning of 2009 , the Ebico Trust awarded Groundwork £120,000 to help vulnerable homes such as these cut their energy bills by offering them energy saving advice, and installing simple energy saving devices. This money will continue to help homes throughout 2010 and into 2011.
Groundwork chief executive, Tony Hawkhead, said: ‘Groundwork's 'Green Doctors' provide personalised energy efficiency advice and supportTop of Form to homes throughout the country at risk of fuel poverty. The Groundwork/Ebico partnership has meant that the Green Doctor has been able to issue even more prescriptions where needed most - helping even more people understand how basic energy efficiency measures can help them save money while reducing carbon emissions.’
Phil Levermore, Managing Director of Ebico, comments: ‘We believe that fuel poverty is best tackled by improving levels of energy efficiency in the UK’s domestic housing stock. It’s great to have the opportunity to help so many homes save through implementing simple energy saving measures, and carrying out simple tasks such as fitting energy saving bulbs and draft excluders. More importantly by helping people to be more energy efficient in the future, for example by showing them how to use their heating controls effectively.’
‘The Ebico Trust will continue to support the Green Doctor scheme for the next year and we are looking forward to seeing a similar success in the upcoming year. ‘
