CREATING AND IMPROVING SPORTS FACILITIES ACROSS THE UK

Barclays Spaces for Sports

Barclays Spaces for Sports was a three-year £30m community sponsorship programme funded by Barclays to create or improve sports facilities in communities across the UK.

Barclays Spaces for Sports was a partnership between Barclays, the Football Federation and Groundwork and ran from 2004 to 2007.

The programme is now closed for applications and there is no further funding available

Key achievements of Barclays Spaces for Sports Throughout the duration of the programme more than 180 community sports sites across the UK were opened and awarded over 3,800 coaching packs.

More than half a million people across the country were able to benefit and make use of new or improved sports facilities.

Barclays Spaces for Sports provided people access to over 24 different types of sports, from hockey, football and netball right through to tea-dancing and lawn bowls.

The programme enjoyed a high profile and captured the attention of high-level public figures: former Prime Minister Tony Blair came along to open the 100th site at the Old Trafford Sports Barn in Manchester and to watch the community show off their new facilities.

In total 200 sites across the UK will be opened, as well as 4,000 Coaching Packs awarded.

Over £10m has been levered in for the local sites through Groundwork and our delivery partners Nacro and BTCV.

The programme has been recognised for its impact on the community and won 3 awards:

  • Sport Industry Awards 2007
  • Hollis Sponsorship Awards 2007
  • Business in the Community Awards 2007
