Promoting health and well-being

Little boy playing in a landscaped green spaceWe provide the facilities and support to help people become more physically active and make healthier lifestyle choices.  We encourage people to get involved in sport and leisure activities by improving the quality of local green spaces and access to community facilities.  We create and improve footpaths and cycleways and involve people in physical work like digging and planting, offering an alternative workout to a gym.   We encourage people to adopt healthier diets by helping them grow their own fruit and vegetables, often on local allotment sites or in school grounds.  We also work with schools to educate children about where their food comes from.

Our work promotes both physical health and mental well-being.  Helping people who are suffering from stress care for the natural environment through gardening can improve their condition.  Providing direct contact with nature can also help people recover from or cope with long-term illnesses.   We often deliver projects in the grounds of hospitals, day centres and care homes, creating settings that promote better health and providing therapeutic activities for those involved.

An example of our work

Increasing traffic and fear of strangers have conspired to restrict young people's freedom to play outdoors, get exercise and experience the natural world.  Rather than relying just on swings and springy chickens, Groundwork's natural play programme creates exciting recreational spaces that make use of natural features such as landform, vegetation and water.  With appropriate design young people can create their own play environment in ways that suit their own needs, desires and imaginations.
