Full Story

Throughout the project M&S staff wanted to prove that the profits from carrier bags were supporting the local community so Groundwork Thames Valley responded by organising a bag packing day, where Groundwork staff went to the store for the day, explained to customers at the tills about the project, and gave them leaflets with details of how to get involved in the project.

This also encouraged greater involvement from M&S staff as they were given extra information on the project and the general Plan A campaign, so as to be able to discuss it with customers and answer questions effectively.

Hundreds of local people attended the opening event and there was also good attendance at interim volunteering events showing the popularity of the park and the project. This has increased people’s wellbeing and pride at being able to make a difference in their local park. Local children particularly mentioned how happy they were to be consulted on what equipment they wanted and be allowed to help in a practical way. The community and M&S staff engagement made this project a success and an example of good practice for future projects.
