The three-year New Horizon programme helps to engage young ex-offenders between 16 and 25 by offering voluntary work experience, alongside mentoring and accredited training, in their local communities. Funded by youth volunteering organisation v. the programme is run in the areas of Creswell, North Northamptonshire, London and Leeds.
New Horizons aims to shape positive futures for volunteers through raising their confidence, improving the perception of these young people in their local communities and equipping them with skills and qualifications to secure future employment.
Volunteers are referred to the programme by a number of agencies - for example the Youth Offending Service, the police or Connexions. Projects on the programme are tailored to meet local needs and are varied - ranging from entry-level green space management, energy efficiency home improvements to constructing environmentally friendly social housing.
