Climate Change Adaptation

FloodingOur climate is changing and we are experiencing the effects now. Even if we make significant reductions in emissions today, the delayed effects of the carbon dioxide already put into the atmosphere mean that we are ‘locked in’ to decades of climate change and centuries of sea level rise.

New UK Climate Projections show that the UK is likely to see mean temperature rises of around four degrees later this century (with summer temperatures reaching up to forty degrees). So while we must mitigate to try and avoid a two degree rise, we must adapt for four.*

To achieve this, a major programme of action will be required to meet the nation’s adaptation needs, with measures taken today to ensure our towns and cities are habitable in future. This means not only big infrastructure projects to prevent flooding, but smaller scale initiatives to green our urban areas, reducing the 'heat island' effect, and an expansion of green roofs.

We have been training our landscape architects and project officers to understand more about climate change adaptation so that we can build basic principles into future projects.

Groundwork is calling for:

  • Climate change adaptation, including greening, to be embedded into performance management frameworks for local government;
  • All local authorities to prepare green infrastructure strategies;
  • A new national funding stream for strategic green infrastructure investment.
