BIDSTON MOSS RESTORATION SCHEME BIRKENHEAD

Bidston Moss was an area of low-lying marshland until 1936 when it was used to tip household waste. For the next 60 years the site received a mixture of commercial, industrial and household waste.

The site covers 37 hectares and restoration began in 1995 involving a number of local partners (including MWDA, WMBC, ERDF and the local community).

The aim of the restoration project is to transform the former landfill site into an area of open space for:

  • Education
  • Research
  • Community use

When fully restored the site will accommodate:

  • more than 90,000 trees
  • 10 hectares of meadow grassland
  • a nature trail with a diverse range of flora and fauna
  • approx 6.5Km of cycle route
  • a summit feature (‘The Stargazer’) fishing in the overflow pond
