CYCLEWAYS

Sustainable transport and health are two highly topical issues, which Groundwork Wirral is seeking to address. One way of doing this is to encourage people into cycling and walking, along good quality, safe cycle paths.

Over the last few years Groundwork has worked in partnership with Sustrans, WMBC, ERDF, and various land owners to extend the length of cycle track available in Wirral. This has included the completion of the Millenium cycle route, from Hooton in the south up to New Brighton and Seacombe ferry terminal in the north. Also extensions to this, along the river Birket to the coast, and linking to Bidston Moss.

These all include clear sign posting, path markings, specialised gateways, road crossings, and good quality surfaces.

To promote cycling along these paths special events have taken place, such as official openings and sponsored cycling events. A cycle route leaflet covering all the existing paths in North East Wirral, and linking to the health benefits, has also been produced.
