Youth

Realising young people's potential

photo : jazmin and two young peopleWe help young people participate in a range of activities designed to bring them into contact with adults in their community and to increase their own confidence and self-esteem. Our aim is to get young people interested in the place where they live and to help them play a full and active part in society. We do this by encouraging them to take part in practical activities such as making videos about life in their neighbourhood or planning and designing their own play areas or youth shelters. Some of these activities are specifically targeted in places where there are high levels of crime as a way of harnessing young people’s energy and reducing antisocial behaviour.

An example of our work

Don’t Sit, Get Fit, run by Groundwork in Dartford, is improving young people’s health by introducing them to a programme of sports, physical activity and healthy eating. Young people aged 5 to 13 are offered a taster of different sports such as basketball to encourage participation in regular exercise whilst other activities like creating a healthy eating recipe calendar are designed to prompt the young people to think closely about the food that they eat and where it comes from. The scheme tackles childhood obesity by helping young people change their lifestyles in ways that are fun and enjoyable at the same time as encouraging them to learn.
