Young people complete life-changing programme in Bury

Posted on 07 May 2014

A team of 6 unemployed young people have completed a 13 week programme designed to boost confidence and unlock their career potential.

The Prince’s Trust Team programme, delivered by Groundwork and based at The Fusilier’s Museum in Bury involves a series of exciting challenges. These include a week long residential, community projects, a two week work placement and intensive ‘next steps’ week.

During the 13-week course, the young people have been fundraising and helping communities whilst building their skills and confidence. After an action packed residential in Ingleton, North Yorkshire the team completed a community project by creating a better environment for residents living at Southbank Road in Bury with the support of AKSA Housing.

Harrison Brown, 17, from Heywood, is one of the team of 16 to 25 year olds who has completed the programme.

Harrison said: “The course has given me confidence to be able to speak more and be more relaxed when under pressure. It has given me the self-belief that I can make something of myself and that I don’t need qualifications to be able to get a good job as long as I am determined. I now have the motivation to get into a career doing something practical."

Valuable work placements were completed by team members with local businesses such as J and J Ormerod PLC and Service Care. The young people also planned Team Challenges with the support of Bury Children’s Rights by taking children and young people in care on day trips to Blackpool, Manchester Football Museum and Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Manchester.

Sarah Hill, Groundwork Prince’s Trust Team Leader, said: “Young people are left to suffer the harshness of unemployment and not knowing what to do with their futures. Groundwork is here to support the self-progression and development of young people. Our fantastic Team programme aims to help build skills, friendship and most importantly a purpose and a sense of belonging.”

“The team have worked so hard to make a massive difference to their own lives and the local community. They should all be immensely proud about what they’ve achieved.”

The team held their Final Presentation on Thursday 24th April at The Fusilier’s Museum to showcase what they have achieved in their time as a Prince’s Trust Team member with their families and friends.

The Prince’s Trust will help 55,000 disadvantaged young people this year, giving them the confidence and skills to turn their lives around. Three in four young people on Prince’s Trust schemes move into work, education or training.

The next Groundwork Prince’s Trust Team is due to start on Monday 19th May, at The Fusilier’s Museum in Bury. For more information on the course, please contact Sarah Hill on 07525 130 104 or email sarah.hill@groundwork.org.uk
