Our education and training department has a long history of providing effective, high quality educational provision.
We offer a wide range of programs to schools in our operational area (Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire and Rotherham), along with a variety of programs to pre-16 students who find the traditional educational setting challenging. Our programs are based on practical experience and ‘hands-on’ learning to help individuals reach their full potential.

The Discovery Centre

Our Education Centres are based at West Burton and Cottam Power Stations in Retford, Nottinghamshire. It is a joint initiative with EDF Energy, the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Groundwork, where FREE educational activity days are provided covering both scientific and environmental topics. This free offer also includes a 25% discount on transport costs for schools.

Our activity days can be tailored to suit each and every group attending, whether they are a full day or a half day visit, and can be adapted to suit all age groups and topic preferences. We make learning about electricity, forces, light and dark, sensory initiatives, environmental subjects (and a lot more!) interesting and enjoyable for children of all ages. A tour of the power station is also an available option. Your visit to our Education Centre is a hands on, practical and fun day for children and community groups, which we have wonderful reviews on that we are extremely proud of.

Single Pathway & Enrichment Programme

This program offers Y10 and Y11 pupils who are struggling to achieve in the traditional school environment the opportunity to pursue vocational subjects. The program is in partnership with other education providers and enables Y10 pupils to do taster sessions of different subjects, and then specialise in a particular subject in Y11. Groundwork Creswell, Ashfield & Mansfield currently offer Construction and Horticulture on this program.

Vocational Skills

We offer Level 1 Construction qualification to pupils in Y9 & Y10. This is a 2 year qualification in which students attend training sessions at the Groundwork Centre for one day a week for two years. This qualification enables pupils who find traditional academic subjects challenging to gain an industry recognised qualification and improve their employability for the future.

Specialist Provision

We offer people from Y9 upwards an alternative learning environment away from the structure of mainstream schooling. Young people can attend from 1 day a week up to 4 days a week for up to 4 years, and will gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Re-engagement/Enrichment Activities

Groundwork also offers short sessions to provide pupils with some breathing space from their usual environments. We have found that these sessions have a positive effect on pupil health and wellbeing and help them to re-engage in the school environment. As part of this program we offer Conservation and Land Management session and Bushcraft Sessions. Please contact us for more information.

Home Maintenance and Horticulture Skills

These two programs run simultaneously and pupils can chose to take one or the other dependent upon their interests. These courses last for ½ a day a week and provide practical education in a range of everyday life skills for example safely changing a light bulb and painting and decorating.
