Green Skills is the shorter of our employment training courses. It is a motivational project that is often a final stepping stone into employment and offers a taster of the construction and landscaping industries.
Green Skills is a three to six week course for young people aged 16 upwards. Small groups of 10-15 learners, supervised by two qualified Groundwork staff, carry out a practical landscape improvement project, and typically work towards either a CSCS card (learners over 18 only) or a Level 1 City & Guilds qualification in Land Based Studies, Practical Horticulture or Employability Skills and Personal Development.
The landscape improvement projects benefit the local community on a site that usually belongs to a housing association or local authority. Work includes creation of raised planting beds, minor fencing and surfacing works, and clearance of vegetation and of small structures. Green Skills can also include First Aid, CV writing and the CITB’s (Construction Industry Training Board) entry test and training on interview skills, culminating in a mock interview conducted by local employers.
