Groundwork delivers grounds improvements in schools and children’s centres to develop underused parts of their outdoor space. We can create areas for wildlife, play and outdoor learning.
Our multi-disciplinary team of experienced Environmental Education Officers and Landscape Architects offers tailored consultation, design and implementation services for school grounds improvements.
Our services range from initial consultations and advice to small-scale design and implementation projects and the production of vision plans for schools to work towards over a longer period. Read our brochure for full details and inspiration.
A key feature of Groundwork’s service is our expertise in involving the whole school community in the consultation and design process. We do this through introductory assemblies and focussed sessions with pupils and teachers, plus INSET on how to develop the school grounds as a teaching resource. In some cases Groundwork can subsidise the cost of consultation and design through funding from the John Laing Charitable Trust.
John Laing plc support Groundwork in delivering school ground improvement projects with the aim of increasing schools' use of their grounds to teach the National Curriculum. This generous support means that projects that may once have seemed out of reach for some schools become a reality. To make sure we tailor this support to the most suitable projects we ask interested schools to submit an application to outline their project proposals.
Recent projects include:
- an installation of a new pond
- a pond audit with the children and teacher training at St Andrews school in Much Hadham
- a family action day at William Ransom school
- working with volunteers to create a path in a wildlife area with seating and a nature trail linked to the National Curriculum
- and the creation of a new entrance path to the main reception of Chauldon Primary, transforming a previously overgrown space
