Chop N Go products made by Groundwork study programme students

Chop N Go

Chop N Go is an enterprise run entirely by our Study Programme students. Producing everything from chopping boards to garden benches, the group of 16-18 year olds take responsibility for all aspects of the enterprise from market research and product design, to sales and finance - bringing their learning to life in more ways than one.

Students from both the Woodland Management and Creative Art and Media course are supported to research, design, make and sell products made from recycled and sustainably sourced wood, and their impressive range of products has so far included chopping boards, pen holders, greetings cards, and even a set of bespoke awards. These products feature unique designs which are burnt into the wood using pyrography tools. The group also produce bags of kindling and charcoal.

The wood is all sourced from Swillington Farm where many of the learners spend time gaining practical woodland management experience. The wood is a natural by-product of the woodland management activities on the farm.

The project provides a fantastic opportunity for the learners to:

  • Bring their learning to life and use their skills to achieve a very tangible end result
  • Take ownership of their own business venture
  • Gain skills in market research, product design, marketing, finance and sales
  • Learn the value of ethical and environmentally conscious production
  • Work as part of a team (a first time experience for some of the young people)

They have so far sold goods via craft and farmers markets in Leeds, including the Corn Exchange, as well as holding sales days at the Groundwork building in Morley. All profit is invested back into the enterprise, or funds visits and activities for the learners such as theatre trips and bowling.
