Groundwork is working across the UK to deliver our part of 'Our Bright Future', a youth-led environmental programme that is designed to inspire the next generation of environment leaders.
Our Bright Future aims to tackle three big challenges facing society today - a lack of social cohesion, a lack of opportunities for young people and vulnerability to climate change. Thirty one youth-led projects across the UK are each receiving around £1m of funding to give young people the skills and knowledge to improve their local environments – from reducing marine pollution to minimising food waste.
Groundwork is running two 'Our Bright Future' programmes: 'Green Leaders' managed by Groundwork UK and 'Welcome to the Green Economy' managed by Groundwork London.
Groundwork London has received £1 million to deliver the below programme, which will create hundreds of training opportunities and jobs in the green economy over the next 5 years.
Welcome to the Green Economy
Funded by Our Bright Future, our programme will engage 700 young people across 70 secondary schools in London and show them how to undertake environmental audits in their schools. They will also learn about the huge range of careers in the green sector.
Groundwork will recruit 400 young people onto training and work experience programmes that will provide them with the necessary skills and experience required to progress into jobs in the ‘green economy’.
For 150 young people who face greater barriers to sustainable employment, Groundwork will create six-month waged work placements incorporating training in order to prepare them for jobs and apprenticeships within the growing ‘green economy’, in areas including reuse, domestic energy services and landscape services, including maintaining and implementing sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) in the capital.
