Green Doctor

Latest government statistics show that around 4.5 million UK households are in fuel poverty, a figure representing 17% of all UK households.

What is the Green Doctor? 

Our award winning Green Doctors are independent, impartial domestic energy experts who can help families to make their homes warmer, cut fuel and water bills and reduce their carbon footprint. 
 

How does the Green Doctor Work? 

Typically working in partnership with a housing provider, utility company or energy company, Green Doctors offer home visits and provide advice on energy use, explain how to access grant support for improvements and give support on other environmental issues such as recycling, composting and water use. Green Doctors show people how to make their homes more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run."Working with Groundwork on Eastlands Homes' energy advice pilot was a really positive experience. Groundwork really delivered for us, mobilising really quickly and providing a quality service all round. We are currently exploring opportunities for further joint working in the future."

The service can be tailored to your needs but typically includes:

  • Home visits and issue of personalised “prescription”

  • Installation of energy saving devices

  • Support to householders to aid understanding of bills and resolve issues with suppliers including switching providers

  • Training for staff and / or volunteer energy champions

Why use the Green Doctor?

Motivations will vary but usually include some or all of the following:

  • Help vunerable householders save money on fuel bills and leave more money for rent and other outgoings

  • Provide added value to other investment programmes, such as retrofit

  • Support strategic objectives around sustainability

  • Enhance reputation as part of an extended service offer to tenants

  • Provide valuable information about your housing stock, e.g flagging up issues with damp or ill fitting windows or doors

Groundwork partnered with Southway Housing and Eastlands Homes to deliver a Green Doctor Service to residents at risk of fuel poverty and / or Welfare Reform.
In one year the service supported over 450 households (70% of those targeted) and identified average annual cost savings of £284 per household. 90% of households acted on our recommendations.

Southway Green Doctor Scheme was awarded the 2014 National Housing Federation Regional Community Impact Award, ‘Greener Living’ category.

 

Green Doctor with Southern Water
Our sister Trust Groundwork South has teamed up with Southern Water and IncomeMAX to encourage 1 million customers to take advantage of a new water meter.

Southern Water Customer

  • Save 162 million litres of water (equivalent to around 65 Olympic swimming pools)

  • Reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1.4 million tonnes (equivalent to the emissions produced by 400 million people flying from London to Hong Kong and back)

  • Claim an additional £3 mllion pounds in benefits
