In July 2012, management of the Whitwood Golf Club was officially handed over to Groundwork and the club has gone from strength to strength ever since. Saved from potential closure, Groundwork have developed the course to become one of the finest examples of modern day golf design in the Yorkshire region, developed to be both challenging and rewarding.
Whitwood Golf Club has also forged links with local schools in the area and offers a grass roots golf programme for primary school children as well as free junior coaching sessions during school holidays. We have also implemented a diversionary programme aimed at working with young people from the Normanton area. In conjunction with the Well Project, the programme aims to provide a stimulus for young people that have been identified as ‘at risk of offending’ or face similar challenges. The project has received support from the local police and had initial support from proceeds of the crime fund.
Groundwork has received an investment of £220,000 from Key Fund and Power to Change to make improvements to its two golf clubs – Whitwood Golf Club in Wakefield and Springhead Park in Hull.
The £220,000 investment comprises a £132,000 loan from Key Fund and an £88,000 grant from Big Lottery’s Power to Change. The investment will enable Whitwood to open a new footgolf facility that will provide leisure facilities for local families. It will also help the club to make improvements to the course and facilities.
