We were delighted to welcome Leeds TV to Groundwork North, East & West Yorkshire’s Morley head office recently to chat to Louise Stevens from the Green Doctors team. The Green Doctors work in partnership with Care & Repair Leeds & Age UK Leeds to provide the ‘Home Plus’ service, helping people whose council tax bill comes from Leeds City Council stay warm and well during the winter.
Leeds TV filmed here as part of a series of episodes created in collaboration with the Adults & Health Directorate at Leeds City Council and broadcast as part of Leeds TV’s #StayWellThisWinter campaign.
This video looks at the impact of our Green Doctors, who visit people’s homes to advise and assist with energy saving. Leeds TV meet with Alan, one of the Green Doctors clients, who has benefited from a new heating system and energy efficiency improvements.
Alan’s wife tragically passed away in September, leaving Alan struggling with his finances. The Green Doctors arrived at Alan’s home during winter last year to help him manage his finances and what was remaining of his mortgage, and noticed his house was particularly cold. The only heating in Alan’s house was a gas fire in the living room, leaving the rest of the house freezing cold. The Green Doctors, in partnership with Leeds City Council, supplied Alan with central heating throughout his home, ensuring he was warm and well throughout the winter.
There are many ways people can help keep themselves and their homes warm during the winter months. The Green Doctors can help with advice on energy providers to save money with a better deal, showing clients how to manage their heating controls, installing simple energy-saving measures such as draft excluders, reflective radiator panels, hot water tank jackets and water saving devices. They can also help those eligible to apply for the Warm Homes Discount or grants for insulation and central heating.
