Our major projects

Tilgate Park - The Walled Garden community café and Glasshouse, Crawley, Sussex

We work with the community to run the café in the Walled Garden, which was originally park of the Tilgate Estate.

Alongside the cafe we are working to fundraise and restore the park’s large Glasshouse into a functional greenhouse that can be used to provide young people (and older people) with apprenticeships, training opportunities.

The greenhouse will be used to teach horticulture and run a community growing and healthy eating project. Teamed with the café we hope to be able to serve food grown in the park.

Combe Valley Countryside Park
, St. Leonards, Hastings, Sussex

Groundwork South is the managing agent for the Combe Valley CIC.

The Park covers approximately 2.3 square miles (about 1440 acres) between Bexhill and Hastings. Although most of the land is privately owned and farmed, there are lots of paths for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, allowing the quiet enjoyment of this beautiful stretch of East Sussex countryside.

Surrounded by urban communities it provides a much needed ‘breathing space’ for the immediate population of 22,500 and an overall urban population of 130,000 residents, with much of the land recognised for the quality of its ecology, wildlife or geology.

We have recently started running Horticultural Traineeships for 19-25 NEET young people.

The 'Discovery Centre' in Bulverhythe playing fields, is now regularly opened, please come down and see us! The team would be very happy to talk about the park, what our plans are, and how you might help support this fabulous local green space to Hastings.

New Visitor Centre - Hastings Country Park,
Hastings, Sussex

Groundwork South with Hastings Borough Council, has worked in partnership with European partners to secure Interreg funding through the ‘Up-Straw’ Programme. This funding will be for the straw bale constructed interpretive visitor centre, which will showcase the use of this environmentally positive build technique and champion its use by local authorities across the UK and within the European partner nations.

The build should start in Autumn 2018 with an estimated opening of Spring 2019.

Hidden Hastings Heritage -
Hastings Country Park, Hastings, Sussex

This project will uncover and showcase the rich natural, archaeological and historical heritage of Hastings Country Park.

Using some of the exciting and unique stories of the park, this project will engage with new and diverse audiences and raise awareness of the Park. We aim to improve visitors' experiences by providing different methods of engagement including an education programme, conservation volunteering, heritage trails, get involved days and family events, a clear digital presence for the park and interactive online content. There will also be some capital works to improve access and paths.

By the end of Hidden Hastings, alongside the project to create a new Visitor Centre at the Country Park, we hope to turn the park into a Hastings highlight that can be enjoyed and explored again and again.

Traineeships

We run Level 1 City and Guilds Practical Horticulture Skills Traineeships in Combe Valley and at Tilgate. Each young person will be able to learn skills such as planting, preparing ground, pruning, using a mower, maintaining turf or constructing a path; and brush up on their maths an english at the same time.

Functional skills Level 1, together with the horticultural qualification and work experience with a grounds maintenance team, is the perfect pathway to an apprenticeship or a permanent gardening position.
