Groundwork was established in 1990 in the former district of Islwyn, in recognition of the opportunities for developing new environmental initiatives in partnership with the public, private and voluntary sectors.
In 1995 Groundwork extended its area of benefit to form Groundwork Islwyn & Rhymney (Caerphilly), with the support of the Welsh Office, Local Authorities and key partners, to include the former Rhymney Valley District Council area.
In 1997 the Trust became Groundwork Caerphilly to reflect the change of name of the new County Borough of Caerphilly. Groundwork aims to work in partnership to contribute to a strategic programme for the regeneration of the County Boroughs of Caerphilly and surrounding areas.
In February 2015, Groundwork Caerphilly and Groundwork Wales merged, to form one organisation serving the needs of Wales.
