Sustainable Urban Drainage

As well as being a fundamental building block for life water can often cause problems and how we treat water can exacerbate this further. Think of flooding, pollution, dwindling fish populations... the list goes on. Thats why we are doing something about it.

We are using Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions (SuDS) in a range of local community setting to sort out immediate water issues (flooding, spread of pollution into watercourses etc.) as well as create new greener and cleaner local environments for all who live and work there.

A great example of this is Middleport Pottery where Groundwork worked in partnership with the Prince’s Regeneration Trust and the Environment Agency to provide retro-fit SuDS solutions to rainwater management at the Grade II* Historic Middleport Pottery in Burslem, Stoke-On-Trent. The designs involve taking rainwater via downpipe’s from the building roofs’ and diverting into nearby Rain Garden’s within the surrounding Pottery environment. The project had two elements which included diverting water from the Bike and Smoking Shelter roof into a linear retained Rain Garden at the lower end of the Pottery car park.  Water from this roof presently spills out into a corner of the car park causing some flooding. The other design involved diverting rainwater from the Pottery Shop Grade II* building roof and into the Quince Garden Rain Garden planting bed. At the end of the system a soakaway has been installed to take any overflow from the new Rain Garden beds. The local community were involved at every stage from consultation to local school children planting up the rain garden.
