Cedric is a volunteer for Groundwork East. He is currently working on the CDA Herts Community Garden in St Albans as part of their Green Team programme, a 14 week skills and development programme in practical horticulture and employability.
"I found out about the Green Team apprenticeship through a charity called Herts Young Homeless (HYH). They discovered I had an interest in gardening and recommended that I apply.
"Before joining the team I was working in electronics but I much prefer working outdoors instead of indoors. Every summer I spend time helping out friends with their gardens so working on the community garden is great.
"I enjoy working with the other lads – we have good banter! We had fun the other day pulling down an old shed and we recently built a fire pit too as well as creating a pond and building a seating area. We’ve made some great progress. Every day I notice that something new has been achieved – it’s a good feeling.
"I’m currently working towards my City & Guilds Level 1 award in employability and City & Guilds Level 1 practical horticulture as well my functional skills course in Maths and English.
"In the future I want to run my own gardening business so working with the Green Team three days a week is giving me the skills I need to help achieve my goal."
