Wild About Stockport
Duration: April 2025
Background
Thanks to funding from the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund we’re working with Stockport Council to re-wild two sites in Stockport town centre and create a programme of activities, events and volunteer opportunities to connect children and adults to nature in the heart of the town centre.
Our Wild about Stockport project is inspired by the book ‘The Lost Words’ and accompanying resources which seek to reconnect people to the natural world, and words and stories which once were commonplace in our day to day language that are now becoming forgotten.
What we’re doing
- Community activities – our team will engage local people and encourage increased use of town centre green spaces by running a range of art activities which engage people with nature, wildlife band Stockport’s history as a textile town.
- Community insights – during events our team will seek to discover residents views and opinions on proposals for a newly revived pocket park (by Redrock), improvements to existing green space at St Peters Square and explore opportunities to re-wild the ‘Bear Pit’.
- Enhancing greenspaces in the town – our landscape architects will work with volunteers to enhance St Peters square so it features more nature friendly planting. They’ll install a range a features, including, square carpets of spring bulbs which provide a vital early nectar source for insects and food for birds.
- Interpretation panels will be created for each space in order to share the work of the programme and importance of nature based solutions.
