The Coronavirus Community Support Fund grant to Groundwork Yorkshire will see six projects established in the town and target people who may benefit from community engagement and environmental projects.
The ambition to set up a digital library of iPads for those vulnerable, shielding or who may benefit from being better connected. Groundwork will also run a series of projects for people of different ages and backgrounds, with initiatives that promote environmental improvement and connecting people with others whilst outdoors.
Plans are now underway for a community garden, environmental work with schools and a new ‘Men in Sheds’ site in 2021 to bring isolated people together. The aim is to promote new skills, social interaction and community involvement.
Project Officer Joshua Scarlett says the funding will make a real difference.
‘We all know the challenges this year has presented. Now more than ever the chance for anyone isolated to communicate and work with others really can transform people’s lives. It’s fantastic that Groundwork has secured this funding for Selby, where we have a strong sense of community that Groundwork wants to tap into.’
So, if you know someone who lives in Selby, is aged over 65, and would benefit from being better connected, they can now apply to borrow an Apple iPad for 12 weeks. In partnership with the National Lottery, Groundwork can offer people who may be socially isolated, or on a lower income, the chance to borrow an iPad to help them with staying in touch with family and friends, shopping, and being better connected. Full IT support and training can be provided.
