Location:                Office base, Sunderland City Centre, with transport provided to sites in Sunderland,

Newcastle, Gateshead and South Tyneside.

Duration:               Fixed term Six months from August 2022.

RoE is an exciting new programme supported by DEFRA, the National Lottery Heritage Fund through their Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The project will support improvements to the river estuaries and employ young trainees to deliver these improvements in 6 areas across the North East.

About the role

This River Estuary Ranger role will be an important part of delivering this aim, you will help to develop and implement our new Revitalising our Estuaries (RoE) project which aims to protect and enhance our North East River Estuaries, fighting climate change and creating over 40 new jobs.

Under the direction of the Revitalising our Estuaries Senior Ranger they will carry out practical tasks such as fencing, footpath improvements, vegetation management, tree planting, installing site furniture, invasive species control and river estuary habitat improvements to enable achievement of the work programme ensuring deadlines are met whilst maintaining quality.

This role will be part of Groundwork’s unique staff development modules with training around surveying and monitoring skills, impact evaluation, community engagement, carbon literacy as well as anything else applicable to your role. This role will include opportunities for the post holder to develop their skills and experience through training/webinars/coaching in any specific areas of interest within Groundwork’s field of work; from Youth, Employment, Skills, to Community Activism, Health & Wellbeing or Landscape Improvement/ Nature Recovery Projects.

Project activity will take place from the Wansbeck & Blyth Estuaries in Northumberland to the, Tyne & Wear, Tees and Esk in North Yorkshire but this role will focus on delivery in Sunderland (Wear) and Newcastle/Gateshead and South Tyneside (Tyne).

 

A bit about you

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who are passionate about enhancing and improving our local environment and can perform physical outdoor work in all-weather. Some experience of gardening, landscaping, environmental conservation is preferred, but you must understand risk assessment processes and Health & safety requirements.
