Project type: Creating stronger communities
"I'd just come out of a couple of years of chronic depression. Coming to Men in Sheds has really helped with that. I've not gone back down that dark tunnel."
Men in Sheds is a fully equipped wood workshop in Morley, Leeds.
The shed has been set up specifically to provide men aged 55 or over with a dedicated space for their age group where they can make things, socialise, share skills, or just enjoy a cup of tea. It takes its inspiration from the international Mens Shed’s movement originally started in Australia.
1.2 million older men report a moderate to high degree of social isolation
A recent report by ELSA found that many older men experience social isolation and that they were less likely than women to engage with traditional projects that aim to support them.
By bringing men from different backgrounds together through a shared interest, the shed is an effective way to reduce the social isolation some experience when they retire.
