Revitalising our Estuaries (RoE) is an exciting programme of river estuary restoration that responds to the dual climate and biodiversity crisis. We work in partnership to improve river estuaries across the northeast of England for local people and businesses as well as the rare and iconic wildlife that our rivers are home to.

Our coastal environments and communities have been significantly and disproportionately affected by environmental, economic and health crises. They now face new and historic challenges from climate change, litter and pollution to Covid, the recessions and de-industrialisation of our region.

They are in desperate need of support to restore the water quality for wildlife; improving habitats, protecting priority species, as well as supporting those that live on their shores. Our innovative Nature-based Solutions (NbS) will help deliver these improvements whilst facilitating carbon storage through the expansion of mudflats, saltmarsh, tree coverage and  the installation other unique eco-engineering structures.

RoE will also deliver events for schools, the public and community groups whilst offering volunteering opportunities.

Our teams of Estuary Rangers and their Supervisors will work on the riverbanks and nearby green spaces to improve the appearance of these riverside amenities enabling local communities to easily and safely connect with their local blue/green space

So far we have employed 37 young people to help restore our river estuaries and green spaces – putting young people at the forefront of our Green Recovery.
