The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse, at Stanley, is a social enterprise. Our offices provide high-quality meeting and conference facilities. Also we host 16 small-medium enterprises. It’s ideally suited for start-ups or small to medium size enterprises looking for a place to grow.

Opened in 2006 at a cost of £4.3 million. The Greenhouse was designed as a sustainable development. We incorporated cutting edge eco-technology. This limits the site’s impact on the environment. It was the first commercial eco building in County Durham.

The Greenhouse is powered by a 35 metre wind turbine. For heating we use a ground source heating/cool system and roof-mounted solar panels. Even the building’s L-shape was considered to maximise the sun’s light and heat potential.

Other energy-saving tactics employed include a passive ventilation system. A rainwater capture system collects rain from the roof, which is then filtered and used on site. Any excess water used to fill a lake at the front of the building. The building is situated in three acres.

We are delighted that many of the original tenants still occupy offices at the site.
