Winterton 2022 formed in 2012 following £1m funding grant allocated by the Big Lottery Fund for expenditure over a 10 year period to ‘enable local people to build on local talents and aspirations and identify and act on their own needs’.

Winterton 2022 engaged North Lincolnshire Voluntary Action (NLVA) as a charitable trust to act as co-ordinators for the project.

In 2018 Groundwork NEWY were invited to submit a competitive application to assist Winterton 2022 by analysing the town’s challenges and potential, organising a Planning for Real event and subsequently providing a series of designs for improvements to Winterton based on local views and needs.

The success of the Big Local application was based on the deprivation figures of one particular neighbourhood which (in 2010) fell into the lowest 20% overall and the lowest 10% of areas in terms of education, skills and training, the lowest 14% both in terms of health and disability and income and the bottom 20% in terms of employment.
