STATEMENT: Groundwork response to Levelling Up Parks Fund announcement

In response to today’s announcement from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to pledge £9m for parks, Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said:

“We’re pleased to see the government recognise that investment in our urban green spaces is needed – and recognise the need to prioritise the places where people are less able to connect with nature and enjoy the many social benefits good quality parks deliver. Green spaces matter to all of us – whether they’re places to preserve our physical and mental health or protect us from the impacts of climate change by providing shade and preventing flooding. However, for some people they’re inaccessible or unwelcoming. This is an opportunity to work with communities to re-imagine and regenerate local parks so that they better meet the needs of everyone in the area.”
