A group of 12 young people, aged between 16 and 25, have recently supported a community project at the Hattersley Big Garden Project on Union Close in Hyde, Tameside.
The young people undertook a variety of tasks including weeding, painting and planting. As a result, they created a seating area for local people to enjoy and a secure animal enclosure for ducks and other wildlife.
Supporting community projects is a cornerstone in the Prince’s Trust Team Programme, which is delivered in Ashton, Rochdale & Oldham by Groundwork Greater Manchester. The 12-week personal development programme supports young people aged 16-25 who are not in education, employment or training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification – ‘Prince’s Trust Award in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills’.
Shawnie, aged 23 from Hattersley is one of the young people currently taking part in the Team Programme who has recently taken part in the community project in Hattersley. She commented;
“I picked this project because I live in the local area and wanted to help the community and I saw the potential of the project here. I have enjoyed being outdoors and knowing that our hard work is all for the benefit of the community. I have learnt that I am capable of leading a team and working with others to create something good.”
Des, from the Hattersley Big Garden Project was impressed with the work the young people produced and their attitude throughout the two week-long project.
“The work they have done has been brilliant!”
As well as volunteering on a community project, Prince’s Trust Team Programme participants undertake a variety of learning opportunities and experiences to enhance the life skills and aspirations of the young people.
Groundwork Greater Manchester deliver the Team programme in Ashton, Rochdale & Oldham with opportunities to participate in future programmes available to young people aged 16-25 who are not in education, employment or training.
