From Spark Plugs to Seed Plugs

A man from Fleetwood has gone from spark plugs to seed plugs. Jordon, aged 21, who originally trained to be a mechanic, now has his sights set on a career in horticulture.

He recently joined Groundwork as a Gardening Assistant via the Kickstart programme. Jordan had spent the previous year on Universal Credit, applying for a range of different jobs without much success. He was starting to give up hope that he’d ever find a job and didn’t know what to do next.

Prior to this Jordon had completed his Level One qualification in Vehicle Mechanics. Just after starting his Level Two, he moved to Tameside in Manchester, to live with and look after his granddad.  However, he was told that rather than being able to continue his qualification at a new college, he would have to start again. He eventually decided not to continue the course.

Joining Groundwork

Jordon had always enjoyed gardening with his Grandparents, so when he heard about a job at Groundwork as a Gardening Assistant, he decided to apply. After an interview, he was offered the job.

He now works as part of Groundwork’s Grow Blackpool team. This involves carrying out a range of gardening activities on the community farm and supporting volunteers on the project.

Jordon says: “I’ve really enjoyed being part of a team. Grow Blackpool is a brilliant project to be involved in. It has really improved my confidence and my communication skills. I feel a lot more comfortable around people than I was before. I’ve loved learning about gardening, the different types of plants and how to grow and look after them.”

He says: “Working outdoors on the farm has given me a better appreciation of the environment and how important it is for us all to look after it. It has also helped me to have a healthier diet and eat food that’s more nutritious. I’ve even stopped taking sugar in my tea, which I never thought was possible.”

Getting encouragement and support

“My manager Clare has been a great support to me. As well as encouraging me and supporting me in my job, Clare has also helped with my personal development. She put me in touch with Blackpool ACFL. I’m now working towards my Level Two in Maths and English, which will help me in my future career.”

Clare Gooden, Grow Blackpool Project Manager says; “Jordon is a pleasure to work with. I’ve been really impressed with his ability to learn and implement new skills really quickly. He is really polite and courteous, which helps to provide a friendly and welcoming environment for our volunteers.”

Next Steps

Once he has finished his Maths and English qualifications, Jordon plans to study horticulture at college and is hoping to pursue a career involving gardening.
