Welcome to Grow Speke
Grow Speke is a community hub in Speke, South Liverpool. It is a partnership project between SLH and Groundwork CLM.
We have worked together across South Liverpool for the last 7 years creating a vibrant community garden and food growing hub on this once derelict site. It is now a thriving place where people from the local community can make new friends, learn new skills and improve their own health and wellbeing. The local people who regularly come to volunteer benefit for their own physical and mental health reasons as well as giving back to the community.
Free to all
The site hosts a variety of activities throughout the week that are accessible and free to all. These include; food growing, horticulture/gardening, cooking, education and training, health and wellbeing, arts and crafts and learning about nature conservation and biodiversity. We engage with all abilities and have EPIC who are a local group for young adults in supported care who come once a week to us and they are really enjoying being involved and growing in confidence.
What’s on site
Grow Speke contains a polytunnel, 25 timber raised fruit and vegetable beds, a fruit orchard, a pond and a colourful native wildflower meadow. There is also an office with toilet and portakabins, containing a kitchen on site.
We also have our own apiary with 6 beehives and a registered beekeeper who looks after the honeybees on the site. They produce natural honey that is then harvested and sold in jars for a very reasonable price of £5 to fund the bees upkeep.
Giving back
The majority of the fruit and veg grown on site is donated to local people and their families via local community groups. The remainder is taken home by the volunteers themselves as a thank you for their help, which they can then share with their own friends and families to cook and eat.
Engaging with nature
At Grow Speke we have created a community space that allows local people to engage with nature on their doorstep. Thanks to local volunteers, funders and partners, the site has been transformed into a vibrant, food productive area that doesn’t use any pesticides and improves people wellbeing through supported community engagement and connecting with nature.
Grow Speke isn’t just about growing fruit, vegetables and flowers – its also about allowing people to grow too, in a welcoming and friendly environment. Or as we like to say, ‘Grow with the Flow’.
