Share Your Skills At The Community Shed

Are you a skilled joiner, carpenter, or DIY expert?
A new community project in St Helens is calling on skilled joiners, carpenters and DIY enthusiasts to volunteer for a few hours per week to act as skills mentors and share their expertise.
The Cannington Shaw Community Shed is set to open in January at the historic No. 7 Bottle Shop site. It will offer a welcoming space where local people can learn practical skills, connect with others and help repurpose a piece of the town’s industrial heritage.
Volunteers will be involved in:
- Restoring History: Guiding participants in repurposing elements of the No. 7 Bottle Shop building.
- Teaching Life Skills: From basic DIY to confidence-building, these sessions will empower people to tackle home repairs and even boost employability.
- Building Community: The shed will combat social isolation by creating a vibrant, hands-on environment for learning and friendship.
The Shed is a unique opportunity for retired tradespeople, or those with flexible schedules, to give back to the community, share their passion and leave a lasting legacy.
Formal qualifications aren’t required—just practical experience, know-how and a willingness to teach.

John Tabern, Cannington Shaw’s Project Director says: “The Community Shed is about more than skills—it’s about restoring pride in our heritage and creating a space where people feel connected and valued.
