From Part-Time Jobs to Parliament: Luke’s Green Career Journey
A year ago, Luke was working two jobs, in a hotel kitchen and at the theatre—busy, but unsure where it was all leading. Recently, he spoke in the House of Commons about the future of green jobs and why investing in young people matters.
I am really grateful for the opportunities and support that Groundwork is providing to gain new skills and experience and develop my career.
Finding A Pathway
After finishing his A-levels, Luke found himself in a position many young people will recognise. He was juggling two part-time jobs—working as an usher at his local theatre and cooking breakfasts at a nearby hotel. He wanted to build a career, but had no clear pathway into something he felt passionate about.
That changed when Luke joined Groundwork as a Green Doctor Trainee.
This entry-level role gave him the chance to gain practical skills, training and experience in a growing sector. It also opened the door to a career that aligned with his values—helping people while contributing to a more sustainable future.
Gaining Skills and Confidence
Now a key member of the Green Doctor team, Luke supports households facing fuel poverty, offering advice and practical solutions to help people stay warm and reduce their energy bills. Through this work, he’s not only making a real difference in his community, but also developing valuable skills and confidence.
Luke’s growing expertise has also seen him share his knowledge more widely. He has appeared on local radio and podcasts, offering energy advice to help local communities better understand how to stay warm and reduce costs—extending his impact beyond the households he supports directly.
Inspiring Others
The impact has gone far beyond his day-to-day work. Luke has since taken his voice to a national stage—speaking on behalf of Groundwork in the House of Commons about the importance of investing in green jobs and creating opportunities for young people. He has also become a Youth Ambassador for Youth Employment UK, using his experience to inspire others and help shape conversations around employment and skills.
I am really grateful for the opportunities and support that Groundwork is providing to gain new skills and experience and develop my career.
When Opportunity Meets The Right Support
Luke’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when the right opportunity meets the right support. For many young people, the challenge isn’t a lack of ambition—it’s a lack of access to clear pathways into meaningful careers.
By creating entry-level roles in green industries, programmes like Groundwork’s Green Doctor traineeships are not only helping to tackle fuel poverty and environmental challenges—they are also unlocking the potential of a new generation.
