Lord Mayor of Liverpool with Grow Speke staff and volunteers.
We were honoured to host a special guest recently – the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray.

As somebody who has previously worked with Britain in Bloom and the Royal Horticultural Society, Councillor Murray is no stranger to the power of green spacesโ€”but even she was moved by the unique spirit of Grow Speke.

A Growing Community

During her visit, the Lord Mayor toured our flourishing site, meeting the dedicated volunteers whose hard work serves as the heartbeat of the garden. From the vibrant flower beds to our sustainable growing areas, she saw first-hand how a shared love for nature can transform a neighbourhood. Councillor Murray highlighted three key areas where Grow Speke is making a huge impact:

  • Community: Providing a sanctuary where people of all backgrounds can connect in a safe, welcoming, green space.
  • Biodiversity: Acting as a vital urban haven for local wildlife to thrive.
  • Planet: Championing sustainability and doing our part for the Earth, starting right here in Speke.

An โ€˜Outstandingโ€™ Legacy

Councillor Murray described Grow Speke as a ‘delightful, hidden gem’. She went on to say; “It’s great for a community to have a place like this. They’ve got everything here and it has been really well thought out. It’s such a beautiful calm space – I just think it’s wonderful.

The Lord Mayorโ€™s praise follows a landmark year for the project; last year, Grow Speke was officially recognised with a 5-Star โ€˜Outstandingโ€™ rating from North West In Bloom. Whether you are looking to volunteer, learn a new skill, or simply find a moment of peace, Grow Speke is proof that when we plant together, we grow together.
