At the Junior Gardening Club, local children get hands-on experience in their very own garden, learning how to grow and identify different fruits, vegetables, and flowers. The learning doesn’t stop at the garden gate and children get to take their fresh harvest home to cook and eat with their families. Alongside gardening, the club hosts a variety of engaging, nature-focused activities including:

• Environmental care: Nature surveys, educational walks, and local litter-picks.
• Outdoor crafts: Making colourful tree chimes, flower art and beautiful hanging tubs for the garden trellis.
• Community greening: Giving back to the wider community by planting flowers to brighten up the local hospital and the nearby town centre at Earlstown.

For Terry Maguire of Business For Youth, the £1,000 grant ensures that local children can continue to enjoy these life-enriching activities entirely for free.

“Schemes like Tesco Fruit and Veg Grants are a lifeline for projects like ours and this money will make a massive difference,” Terry explained. “It means that the gardening club will continue, free of charge to all children in our town. It will also enable us to buy more plants and flowers, as well as equipment like gloves and paints and refreshments for the children in the hot summer weather.”

What are Tesco Fruit & Veg Grants?

Administered in partnership with Groundwork, the Tesco Fruit & Veg Grants scheme supports schools, registered charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK. The programme offers grants of up to £1,500 to projects that improve children’s access to healthy food, with a particular focus on fruit and vegetables. Whether it is providing healthy snacks at an after-school club, tackling holiday hunger, running cooking classes on a budget, or funding “grow-your-own” school gardens, these grants aim to make fresh, nutritious food accessible to children who need it most.
