Our Impact
We work across the East of England to create a fair and green future in which people, places and nature thrive. We do this by providing one to one support, transforming unloved green spaces, getting more people outside enjoying the natural world and supporting individuals and businesses to reduce their environmental impact.
Measuring our impact means understanding how our programmes and services address the social and environmental challenges the people and groups we work with are facing. To do this we collect information about our activity and use this to learn what’s working well and understand what we could do better.
We place our activity under three core themes:

People
In the 2022/23 financial year 12,755 people joined us to take part in food growing and outdoor activities, this includes 1,157 children
280 people were visited by Groundwork’s Green Drs for one-on-one support to reduce energy bills
We supported more than 1,500 young people to build confidence and take their next steps in life
74 people gained a formal qualification by taking part in our programmes, like Ian.
Place
In the year ending March 2023 Groundwork East carried out 262 different projects in partnership with 224 organisations including local authorities, schools and community groups.
Our landscape architects and community officers worked on 52 sites, meaning 181,400 square metres of land – or almost 34 football pitches were improved for people and nature. This included planting 1,380 trees!

Planet
The average individual’s annual carbon footprint in the UK has been estimated as 12,000 kg CO2e.
We work with individuals, communities and orgnaisations to identify ways to reduce emissions and in 2022/23 we identified:
- 118,2034kg of CO2e of potential carbon savings from our support to households through programmes such as Green Doctor
- 17,459kg CO2e of potential carbon savings from our support to community groups
- A whopping 6,945899kg CO2e of potential carbon savings by the businesses we worked with by providing services such as tailored carbon reduction plans
