Helping people to save water, money and the environment in partnership with Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water.

The pilot Water Efficiency Programme conducted over 100 visits in selected properties in November and December 2022. The visits supported metered, high water users in Newport and Cardiff with the aim of reducing water usage, water waste and identifying leaks. Water-saving devices were installed including showerheads and tap aerators, and household leaks were reported to Welsh water to be repaired.

From the water-saving installations, an estimated 72 litres of water per day per household was saved, along with a further 8 litres of water per household by identifying leaks. In total, a remarkable 630 litres of water per day was saved!

The next phase of the programme is now underway in targeted areas of Cardiff. Welsh Water will be in touch with these customers to offer a water efficiency home visit. One of Groundwork’s advisors will visit the home free of charge, and will:

  • Offer advice on how to save water
  • Check all taps, toilets and showers
  • Install the water-saving devices where needed, including: showerheads, shower flow restrictor, shower timer, tap aerator, save a flush bag, outdoor tap jacket and a hosepipe gun
  • Identify household wastage leaks and report these back to Welsh Water to hopefully be repaired

If you are not contacted, you can still save water and save money by heading to the Welsh Water “Get Water Fit” page: https://www.dwrcymru.com/en/help-advice/get-water-fit for day-to-day changes you can make in your household. Why do we need to save water?

Making small changes to save water has many benefits for us and the environment. We cannot survive without it! Here are the benefits of saving-water:

  • Saves energy: energy is needed to filter, heat and pump water to your home, therefore if water usage is reduced, air pollution and your carbon footprint is reduced
  • Saves wildlife: saving water diverts less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep wildlife habitats healthy and safe
  • Saves money: the less water you use, the less money you pay to your water supplier
