Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve

Register today to join 40 Avison Young Volunteers at Bilston Urban Village Nature Reserve – a wonderful reserve increasing biodiversity and links to green spaces for the local area.

Bilston Urban Village is a flagship development for Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country, showcasing the area’s ability to deliver mixed-use and sustainable housing development alongside the creation and management of high quality green spaces. The aims of the project were to rehabilitate 14ha of brownfield land, improving the biodiversity and creating a network of linked biodiverse and multifunctional greenspaces within the development for the local community.

Volunteers are needed to help manage the site including creating habitats and general consideration tasks. Work is also needed on the site’s children’s outdoor activity area including: creating a wildflower meadow and planting an orchard. Additionally volunteers would have the opportunity to try their hand at some forest schools activities including fire lighting using a flint and steel.

Saltwells Nature Reserve

Register today to join 30 Avison Young Volunteers at Saltwells Nature Reserve – one of the UK’s largest nature reserves.

Saltwells National Nature Reserve is a mixture of world-class geology, bluebell covered Ancient Woodland and nationally important heritage. It is one of the UK’s largest urban nature reserves and very proud to be at the heart of the Global Black Country GeoPark. We rely heavily on community support to maintain and improve this important site.

Volunteers are needed to help create a diverse scrub habitat to benefit birds and reduce the damage from possible arson.

Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens- SOLD OUT

Register today to join nearly 30 Avison Young Volunteers at Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens – a unique 18th century garden.

Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens is 10 acres of a unique survival of 350 year-old early 18th century formal garden design. The Grade II* walled garden, once part of the Earl of Bradford’s estate, is now rescued, nurtured and owned by an independent Charitable Trust. Keeping largely to a period relevant style with plant species and heritage fruit from 1680-1760 it’s like visiting the baroque countryside in the middle of a 21st century city.

Volunteers can expect to get involved with hedge and holloway restoration and work maintaining the wetland area.

Baggeridge Country Park

Baggeridge Country Park is a beautiful area of countryside on the doorstep of the Black Country, with a great range of facilities on offer including ponds, woodland walks and a miniature railway.

Baggeridge Country Park has a miniature railway track which volunteers from the Wolverhampton and district Model Engineering Society run giving free rides to local families throughout the year. The group are planning to extend the track and need help cutting back undergrowth, trees and hedges; planting wild flowers; and generally maintaining the site.

The Leasowes Nature Reserve

Date: September 29th 2022

The Leasowes is a historic landscape, listed as Grade I on the English Heritage list of parks and Gardens of historic interest in England.

Help is needed with vegetation clearance in our meadows, woodland thinning, pond restoration and footpath work.

SOHO Community Hall

SOHO Community Hall is based in the Handsworth Area, an economically deprived area of Birmingham. The centre aims to support the whole community, young and old, and runs a number of activities, groups and community initiatives.

Help is needed to create the hall’s community garden. Tasks involved include: building raised beds, installing seating and planting.

Pannel Croft

Pannel Croft Village for the over 55 opened in 2012 and is situated in Newtown, Birmingham. The Village provides homes for affordable rent and shared ownership as well as and a host of community-based health and leisure facilities.

Work is needed to help restore their vegetable and sensory garden and maintain other green spaces. on the site.
